Red and blue are the traditional uniform colors for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star game at Memphis University School. But purple reigned supreme Saturday.

Led by a Most Valuable Player effort from Class 6A Mr. Football winner Kelvin Perkins — who else? — players from Southwind stood out at Stokes-Alston Stadium as the Blue team downed the Red, 31-13, in the annual end of the local high school football season.

It’s the Blue team’s first victory in the game since 2021.

“The kids worked hard all week,” said Blue coach Frederick Copeland of Fairley, still dripping after failing to outrun several of his offensive linemen who were intent on delivering a postgame Gatorade bath.

“We had a great staff. It was just good to have the Blue team come out victorious.”

Of course it helps to have Perkins. After winning the state’s top individual honor earlier in the week at Nissan Stadium — and before he begins his college career at Austin Peay next month — Perkins passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third.

“It was really important (to play in the game),” said Perkins, who guided Southwind to 13 straight victories this season before falling to Brentwood Ravenwood in the semifinals.

“I did not want to lose. It meant a lot to play in this game. To play with some boys I didn’t play with in the regular season ... I’m just blessed.”

Perkins opened the scoring in the first quarter on a play that will have looked familiar to Jaguars fans; seemingly stopped for a short gain, he instead kept his legs churning before eventually slipping past the containment for a 35-yard touchdown.

A 31-yard field goal by Collierville’s Hayden Hollenbeck then extended Blue’s lead to 10-0 before Red then relied on its Briarcrest connection to pull within three.

That one was set up when Southwind’s Quinterrion Hollins recovered a fumble on the kickoff that followed Perkins’ touchdown run.

“He’s as good as they say he is,” Copeland said of Perkins, who accounted for 69 touchdowns during his spectacular senior campaign. “I wish him nothing but the best on his journey.”

Briarcrest QB Hudson Tucker — who set the school’s single-season record for touchdown passes this past season — threw a 65-yard laser over the top to his favorite receiver, William Jones. But Blue led 17-7 at halftime after Perkins tossed a short screen pass to Fairley’s Troyce Grimsley, who turned it into a 60-yard score.

Blue then extended the lead early in the third when Southwind’s Tray Moore, who is headed to Tennessee-Martin, intercepted Tucker and went 61 yards the other way.

“I played cover two,” Moore said. “I saw Tucker drop back (and) he looked to my side. I jumped (the route) a little bit. And, hey, the rest is history.”

Tucker and Jones then teamed up again — this time on a 66-yard play — that pulled Red to within 24-13. But Blue put things out of reach when Perkins found a wide-open Moore on a 43-yard touchdown.

Blue also benefited from the play of Southwind’s Kavious Middleton, who had a quarterback sack in the fourth, and A’Marriyon Morrow, whose blocked punt in the first quarter didn’t count under all-star game rules.

“It feels great to know people my team were popping it,” said Moore of Southwind’s considerable impact. “And making names for themselves. It’s a whole lot of all-stars (playing) but we stood out.”

The Red team leads the all-time series, 13-10.

Copeland and Wiseman to Coach Teams in

23rd Annual AutoZoneLiberty Bowl

High School All-Star Game

HS_Coaches_Pictures.jpg

Story by John Varlas

Last week, Frederick Copeland and Chaz Wiseman met in a key Region 8-2A football game, with Copeland’s Fairley squad getting the victory on a touchdown in the closing seconds.

They’ll get a chance to renew acquaintances in this year’s AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game.

On Wednesday, officials announced that Copeland and Wiseman — who coaches at Memphis Business Academy — will lead the squads for this year’s game. The 23rd edition of the contest is set for Dec. 13 at Memphis University School.

Copeland, who will lead the Blue team, is in his sixth season at Fairley following two years at Westwood. He has a career record of 61-24, a mark which includes a 5-2 record this season and a No. 9 ranking in this week’s Daily Memphian Dandy Dozen.

Copeland guided the Bulldogs to state semifinal appearances in both 2023 and 2024 and is a three-time Region Coach of the Year.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game gives fans an opportunity to see local talent they may not have seen,” Copeland said in a statement. “With the great exposure the all-star game has created ... there has been an increase in the appreciation and recognition for the amount of excellent overall talent that the Memphis area has at all levels.”

Wiseman will lead the Red squad, and, like Copeland, has previously served as an assistant in the game. After a successful middle school career, he took over Memphis Business Academy’s program ahead of the 2023 season and has led the Executives to consecutive trips to the state quarterfinals and a 22-10 record overall, including 4-3 this season.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game provides a great opportunity to showcase the abundance of talent in the Memphis area,” he said. “It gives the selected senior players one last opportunity to end their high school career with a win (and) it’s a great way to kick off the events for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.”

Assisting Wiseman will be Howard Bush (Fayette-Ware); William Dean (Tipton-Rosemark); Cedric Miller (MASE); Aries Nelson (Wooddale) and Gene Robinson (Germantown). Copeland’s assistants will be Slade Calhoun (Munford); Larry Fitzgerald (Mitchell); DeJuan McQuarters (PURE Academy) and Michael Mosby (Oakhaven).

Tickets for this year’s game are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 6 and under. Kick-off is at 2:30 p.m.

Red Team wins 22nd Annual
AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game

Story by John Varlas

One week ago, Rhyan Brown was on the field at the BlueCross Bowl attempting to lead Melrose High to a football state championship.

The Golden Wildcats came up short, falling to Macon County in the Class 4A final. But Brown picked up a nice consolation prize Saturday.

The 5-9 205-pounder picked up offensive most valuable player honors at the AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game, finishing with 108 yards rushing and scoring on a 31-yard run as the Red team defeated the Blue, 30-6, in the annual season-ender at Memphis University Schools’ Stokes-Alston Stadium.

Brown’s score capped a 5-play, 85-yard drive in the third quarter and came after the Blue had scored its only points on a 54-yard pass from Collierville’s Grant Troutman to Gary Greer of Southwind.

The answer was as emphatic as Red’s performance was all afternoon.

“To come out here just after playing (in a) state championship and put in the work and win, it means a lot,” said Brown. “Playing the best of the best in Memphis., man, and still putting up 100 yards. That means a lot to me.

“O-linemen, running backs, time to get gritty.”

Indeed the Red needed a gritty performance on a soggy afternoon. Fairley’s Julian Porter added 105 yards rushing and scored on a 70-yard run in the second quarter that put Red up, 16-0.

“All week, we stressed the importance of just being disciplined,” said winning coach Edward Kuykendoll of Sheffield. “Playing disciplined football ... the guys played their tails off. (Red assistant) Cedric Miller likes to run the football and I’m with that. When you run the football and play good defense, good things happen.”

Even though it was an all-star game, Kuykendoll was miffed his team gave up the one touchdown to the Blue team coached by his rival at the top of Region 8-3A this past season, Bolton’s C.J. Marshall.

He couldn’t complain much about anything else.

Stanley Burrow, who led Miller’s Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering team to the Class 1A state championship last week, opened the scoring by returning a fumble 12 yards in the second quarter. Red added a safety on its next possession.

After Porter’s long run, MASE quarterback Brody Whittaker tossed a 26-yard touchdown to Sheffield’s Radarious Jackson, who is leaving Memphis Sunday and heading to Knoxville to begin his college career at the University of Tennessee.

Mario Jones of Hillcrest aided the Red team’s fine defensive effort with an interception. Houston’s Andre Allen, who also played in the BlueCross Bowl Class 6A title game last week, added an interception.

The fact that players from smaller schools accounted for so many of the key moments wasn’t lost on Fairley’s Delandis Dandridge, who earned the game’s outstanding lineman award.

“This is my last high school game and I was doing anything to get the win,” he said. “I’m always going to cause havoc. It doesn’t matter how many students are in the school, (what matters) is the fight that’s in the dog. You feel me?”

Red now leads the all-time series, 13-9, and hasn’t lost since 2021.

Marshall and Kuykendoll to Coach Teams in
22nd Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl
High School All-Star Game

Two Coaches Edit Copy

CJ Marshall and Ed Kuykendoll, two outstanding and experienced head coaches in the Memphis area, will lead the teams in the 22nd Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game presented by Conway Services and the Tennessee Highway Safety Office.

Marshall, the head coach at Bolton High School, will coach the Blue Team. Kuykendoll, the head coach at Sheffield High School, will coach the Red Team. The All-Star Game will feature the top senior players from Shelby County Schools, municipal schools and private schools in the Memphis area.

The game will be played on Saturday, December 14 at Memphis University School. Kickoff is at 2:30 pm. Tickets cost $10, for kids 6 and under the cost is $5.

“After more than two decades, the All-Star Game has become a tradition and one of the marquee events for local high school players and coaches,” said AutoZone Liberty Bowl Executive Director Steve Ehrhart. “With two experienced head coaches leading the teams, we will continue the tradition of excellence the All-Star Game has created over these many years.”

CJ Marshall was named head coach at Bolton High School in 2019. He took over a program that finished 0-10 the previous season. Since then, Marshall has rebuilt the Bolton team into a winner. In his first season as the Wildcats’ head coach, they had a winning season -- the first in more than 10 years. Marshall has served as an assistant coach in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game the past three years. Bolton is currently 6-1 and #8 in the State Class 3A rankings.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game provides a great opportunity to showcase the abundance of talent in the Memphis area,” said Marshall. “It gives the selected senior players one last opportunity to end their high school football careers with a win. It’s a great way to kick off the December events for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.”

Ed Kuykendoll is in his seventh season as a head coach. He was named head coach at Sheffield High School in 2019. Kuykendoll was head coach at Oakhaven High School in 2018 before taking the Sheffield position. He has an overall record of 31-29, including a 26-13 record the last four seasons at Sheffield. Kuykendoll is a three-time Coach of the Year honoree. He has served as an assistant coach in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game the last two years. Sheffield is currently 4-2 and ranked #12 in the Daily Memphian’s Dandy Dozen.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game gives the fans an opportunity to see local talent they may not have seen,” said Kuykendoll. “With the great exposure the All-Star Game has created over the past twenty years, there has been an increase in the appreciation and recognition for the amount of excellent overall talent that the Memphis area has at all levels.”

The All-Star teams will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of area head coaches and other football analysts. Each player must have the recommendation of his head coach and will be selected on the basis of his character, on-field achievement and classroom performance.

Player nominations must be submitted to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl by Friday, November 1.

University of Memphis standout defensive lineman Dontari Poe, whose outstanding performance at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine led him to be drafted in the 1st round by the Kansas City Chiefs, played in the 2007 AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game. At the NFL combine, Poe (a product of Wooddale High School) had the highest number of bench press reps of any player (44). He also ran a 4.98 in the 40-yard dash which is quite impressive for a 6’4”, 346 lbs defensive lineman. Poe is one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL and was selected to play in the 2013 & 2014 Pro Bowl games.

O.C. Brown, the focal point of the 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary "Undefeated," participated in the 2009 AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game following a successful prep career at Manassas High School. Brown, who originally signed with Southern Miss, transferred to Austin Peay State University in the spring of 2012.

H.R. Greer, a standout fullback from SBEC, received very little attention from college recruiters before participating in the 2007 AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game. However, his performance in front of college coaches during the all-star game enabled him to earn a full scholarship to play at Ole Miss. Greer capped off his career with by being part of the senior class that helped the Rebels get back to the postseason.

During the 2010 NFL Draft, University of Tennessee standout defensive tackle Dan Williams was selected in the first round by the Arizona Cardinals (26th overall pick). Williams participated in the 2004 AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game after a successful prep career at East High School.

In 2009, University of Kentucky standout defensive lineman Jeremy Jarmon was selected in the third round of the NFL Supplemental Draft by the Washington Redskins. Jarmon, a standout at Houston High School, participated in the 2004 AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game. Jarmon also participated in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl as a key member of a Kentucky team that defeated ECU in the 50th Anniversary game.
